Day 2: January 2nd, 2015

Day 2: January 2nd, 2015

Well, that didn't take long... the higher-ups at Instagram were pretty quick to remove my Day 1 Sweet Nothing. But that's okay, just means that you've gotta come by my website to see the blissful unedited versions. Happy hunting!

And so it begins...

Day 1: January 1st, 2015.

Day 1: January 1st, 2015.

So let's start the new year off right. Let's dust off the "news" page and update this little doggy on-the-regular. Go on, get the whole family together, gather around the internet, and let's view some good ol' fashion naughty bits together.
I'm hoping to have this going daily (at least for the month of January). If it continues to be fun and people are getting their kicks I'll keep it going.
And we're off!

Best-Seller in Turkey (maybe)

Journey by Starlight 2012: How do you measure a year? In presidential elections? Mass apocolyptic hysteria? Gangnam Style(s)? Kony(s)?

Well, if Rent taught me anything, you're supposed to measure a year in LOVE. But that's not very scientific, is it? Is it?!

I don't need to link to any fancy-pants Time Magazine article to tell you the obvious: you can't measure anything accurately with LOVE. You need science!

...What's that? You don't know "science"? You only dissected one half of one frog once?

Well! I can't do anything about budget cuts in your high school, but I can single-handedly educate America's youth with my new book, Journey By Starlight

Wait, Britt--what's Journey By Starlight got to do with 2012? Oh, it's just the one project I worked all 525,600 minutes of 2012 on.

Journey is a 208 page graphic novel written by Dr. Ian Flitcroft and published in the US by One Peace Books. Basically, Einstein takes you, the reader, on a Journey By Starlight (get it?)--you start some 3,000 lightyears away on P Cygni (that's the star in Starlight) and end up all the way...Well, you'll have to read it and find out. No spoilers here!

It's the timetravelers guide to life, the universe, and everything, answering everything from why the sky is blue to QUANTUM MECHANICS in a (cross my heart) easy and fun way.

Here are some pictures!!!ever wonder what the "E," the "M," the "C," and the little "2" mean in Einstein's famous equation? Well, let me show you!

just a little relativity, gravity, elevators, and trampolines...how to measure the speed of light! not as difficult as one might think....and just some other stuff too

For your convenience, you can preview the first two chapters of the book here. I've uploaded a video of me flipping through the book on a breezy Sunday afternoon, you know, all casual like.

But instead of wasting your time reading this entry and looking at videos of the book on-line... you should waste your time reading the book in reality- buy it here!

Oh, and regarding the title of this blog--I was sent a picture of Journey from Turkey, with the caption "best-seller!"Journey By Starlight on the best-seller shelves in Turkey --Fingers crossed I'm Turkey's own Le Poopy

Still unsure? Check out a couple of these reviews:

...and this quote came down the pike from THE Jim Ottaviani, of G.T. Labs and ubber-famous in the realm of science comics, "I just finished reading "Journey by Starlight" and am dropping you a line (so as to avoid disappointment and future regret) to let you know I thought your illustration work was first rate. Heck, I think that's an objective truth, in fact. Congratulations on making a complex and dense narrative fun to read!"

Finally, special thanks to my talented and devoted interns Allie Jachimowicz, Emily Spencer, and Lomaho Kretzmann. Additional support provided by Ben Ward, Nara De Sa, and Eugenia Hannon. Thanks guys! Lance Sullivan did nothing to help in this project. Nothing.

Well, that's all folks! BUY BUY BUY, BYE!

New American Paintings, go get you some

Check out the New American Paintings #99 MFA Annual out on shelves now. If you buy a copy from this link http://www.newamericanpaintings.com/99discounted.html you can shave a couple dollars off the cost. I consider myself fortunate for being selected to have my work appear along so many talented MFA candidates from around the nation. It's also been great hearing from subscribers of the magazine... a couple accolades received from some great artist and peers. As of yet, I haven't had many crazies to come out of the woodwork to congratualte me, just one, in a brief but nonetheless awkward texting session. But it's still on the shelves for a bit longer... so, maybe I'll get lucky and score a few more odd exchanges.

Below are a few photos of the issue, including my bio pic, provided by presidential photog. Adam Kuehl- thanks Adam.

Work for the Proles

Just added a PRINT section to the site... Luckily for you, it's work that anybody can afford. Which is great for me too, considering my work generally attracts the lowly poor types. But be quick, the secret is out on some of the images and they are selling like proverbial "hot cakes."As a consequence my edition inventories are either low or completely sold out. Check it 'em out here

In celebration of updating my portfolio (albeit a modest achievement), I've decided to do a quick blog posting that supports the glorious event, and what would be more relevant than a posting on my printing process? Nothing. So, without anymore hesitation... Here's some pictures of my printing process-

key run on "Voyage to Amazonia"

I've been enjoying the process of silkscreening on panels as it creates numerous challenges for the medium. Above is the screen for the key run on "Voyage to Amazonia". Below are images of the process after the second and third runs.

yellow and red runs "Voyage to Amazonia"

blue layer "Voyage to Amazonia"

"Voyage to Amazonia" was my first attempt at printing on a raised surface. Since then, I've completely lost my mind and started experimenting with cube forms... CRAZY, right???? Below is a good illumination of how stupid one of my setups can look like by the end.

Ketchup Fountains and Other Reasons to Get This Gosh Dern Site UP

I was sent a link this morning that highlighted my Ketchup Fondue Fountain.

I figured being featured on Gizmodo, and Tosh.0 blog, among others was a good motivation for me to actually make this site live... as unfinished as it were. So, if you're new to my work, Welcome. My name is Britt Spencer. I have another site that has over the years become a stagnant portfolio of my illustration work. This site will host a broader spectrum of my work... including McDonald's food pyramids with a ketchup fountain crest.

The fountain, a center piece in my thesis show "The Dagnabit!!!", was pretty popular for the two hours it was operational. I had suspected that McDonald's would be a good catering option as it matched my work much better than carrot sticks and celery. Not to mention, much of my thesis is concerned with an adulation of mass consumerism.

I heard a number of gallery goers mention that it above my work was the most memorable thing. I'm ok with that.
