Fireside Chats

Fireside Chats, 2015

Fireside Chats, 2015

Artprize 2015 is here! If you're in the Grand Rapids area you should certainly mosey on over to Craft House Gallery and check out my show Fireside Chats. It's all new work, and boy is it HOT! If you're feeling particularly generous, would you consider voting for my show? My vote code is 61728... I've never been to ArtPrize (heck, I've never even been to Michigan), so I'm not quite sure what to expect. But I hear the voting thing is a way to possibly win some big bucks??? If I win, I can finally afford that ball pit I've been wanting for soooo long.
I'll be up on the 2nd of October to attend the First Friday reception. Come say HI, I'd love to meet all of you.

Here's some gallery information for you:

Golly! New American Paintings issue 118 spectacular!

Quick little news update amongst all the Sweet Nothings here. I just got my copy of the latest issue of New American Paintings. I'm fortunate to be in this issue for my larger works on panel, so, check 'em out. There's a lot of great work AND I got a little mention in the front matter from the Juror's Comments.

Spencer’s dynamic, Day-Glo children’s-book-ready scenes that have taken disturbingly dysfunctional turns recall the often intensely psychodramatic nature of Hairy Who, yet in a style that feels more precisely appropriative of existing imagery.

The Widow Maker

In case you've been wondering why I haven't put up any new Sweet Nothings in the past week, here's your answer: The Widow Maker show. I've been cranking out some new big work for this show and I've been hella busy. Please stop by during the reception to say, 'Sup?' and I'll say it back. Additionally, I'll have ALL the Sweet Nothings on display too! Hope to see you there. Even if you don't want to see the Sweet Nothings there's plenty other good work by some other people too. Who? Oh, just the incredible Will Penny, the ever-so talented Michael Porten and Elizabeth Winnel the magnificent. Wow, come check it out if you don't believe me!

Don't worry about the Sweet Nothings btw, I'm gonna get right back to them after the show.
with love,
Britt

New American Paintings, go get you some

Check out the New American Paintings #99 MFA Annual out on shelves now. If you buy a copy from this link http://www.newamericanpaintings.com/99discounted.html you can shave a couple dollars off the cost. I consider myself fortunate for being selected to have my work appear along so many talented MFA candidates from around the nation. It's also been great hearing from subscribers of the magazine... a couple accolades received from some great artist and peers. As of yet, I haven't had many crazies to come out of the woodwork to congratualte me, just one, in a brief but nonetheless awkward texting session. But it's still on the shelves for a bit longer... so, maybe I'll get lucky and score a few more odd exchanges.

Below are a few photos of the issue, including my bio pic, provided by presidential photog. Adam Kuehl- thanks Adam.

Ketchup Fountains and Other Reasons to Get This Gosh Dern Site UP

I was sent a link this morning that highlighted my Ketchup Fondue Fountain.

I figured being featured on Gizmodo, and Tosh.0 blog, among others was a good motivation for me to actually make this site live... as unfinished as it were. So, if you're new to my work, Welcome. My name is Britt Spencer. I have another site that has over the years become a stagnant portfolio of my illustration work. This site will host a broader spectrum of my work... including McDonald's food pyramids with a ketchup fountain crest.

The fountain, a center piece in my thesis show "The Dagnabit!!!", was pretty popular for the two hours it was operational. I had suspected that McDonald's would be a good catering option as it matched my work much better than carrot sticks and celery. Not to mention, much of my thesis is concerned with an adulation of mass consumerism.

I heard a number of gallery goers mention that it above my work was the most memorable thing. I'm ok with that.
